Tunnel elements on their "maiden voyage"

The  270-metre long submerged tunnel which Pihl is constructing in a joint venture with Züblin in the centre of Stockholm consists of three giant tunnel elements.

Two of the tunnel elements are presently awaiting further transport outside Stockholm where the initial tunnel works are being carried out. Later, the tunnel elements will be towed to the centre of Stockholm to be completed, submerged and connected into one single tunnel.

The elements have been produced in Tallinn and have been transported all the way over the Baltic Sea to Mälaren. It has been a long and - at times - difficult voyage since the elements have for instance had to pass through the narrow lock in Södertälje.

The submerged tunnel will become part of Stockholm’s new railway called “Citybanan", which is being built to improve the train traffic to and from Stockholm.

The project is being carried out in a joint venture with Züblin. Submerged tunnel and connecting works (concrete) are to be carried out as own production.
