Pihl builds underground car parks in Copenhagen - fully automatic parking facilities for 840 cars
2007 11 29 Press Release
Denmark’s second largest contractor, E. Pihl & Søn A.S., has just signed a contract for construction of three fully automatic car parks at a value of 280 million Danish Kroner for the Municipality of Copenhagen. The parking facilities will be accommodating 840 cars in three different quarters of Copenhagen: Nørrebro, Amager and Islands Brygge.
Send your car underground by lift
The three car parks constitute a turnkey project carried out by Pihl. The German company of Westfalia will be supplying and installing the automatic lift systems that will place the cars in the car park and put them back at the feet of their owners. This means that the only trace of the underground car park at street level will be the light buildings, which are to accommodate the car lifts that the drivers will be using for parking in the car parks.
The largest car park, which will have four lifts and be able to accommodate 408 cars, will be situated under a green space at the street of Leifsgade at Islands Brygge while the second-largest car park accommodating 268 cars by means of three lifts will be situated at Under Elmene, Amager, in an area presently constituting shelter trenches. The car park on Nørrebro, accommodating 164 cars, will be established at Nørre Allé opposite the church of Sankt Johannes Kirke. This car park will have two lifts.
Before, during and after the construction
The actual construction work of the three car parks is to commence in the months of February and April 2008 respectively. Prior to that, the Municipality of Copenhagen is to rearrange various cables and pipes. The car parks at Under Elmene and Nørre Allé are to be completed by the end of 2009 while the car park at Leifsgade is to be completed in the spring of 2010.
”Pihl is proud of contributing to improved parking facilities in our capital, and together with the Department for Technical and Environmental Services of the Municipality of Copenhagen we will do all we can in order to minimise the nuisances that such construction work will cause in the areas around the construction sites,” says Per Semmling, Project Director of E. Pihl & Søn A.S., who is very experienced in the field of large civil engineering projects such as the Copenhagen Metro and latest the Malmoe City Tunnel. “But we do of course hope that the residents will bear with us and show understanding for the inevitable noise and dust nuisances during the establishment of the 10 to 15 metres deep structures,” Per Semmling continues.
During the construction period, the Municipality of Copenhagen will try to establish temporary parking space in replacement of the parking space that will be closed during the construction period just as the Municipality will involve and consult the residents in the planning of the arrangement of the city spaces when the many cars can be lowered to the underground by lift in 2009 and 2010.
