Royal Danish Playhouse handed over ahead of schedule
”It is the first large, official cultural building of recent date that has been constructed within the scheduled time and at the agreed price – it was handed over two and a half months before planned. ”, the media wrote about the new playhouse for the Royal Danish Theatre, which Pihl lately handed over to a very pleased client
18-12-2007 Press Release
It is not the first time that Pihl carries out a large-scale and complex construction project in record time. The Copenhagen Opera House – where Pihl had the management contract – was completed on time after a construction period of only three years, and on 3 December 2007 Pihl handed over a new town hall to the citizens of Hillerød, Denmark, almost one month ahead of schedule.
The criteria for carrying out such a large and complex building project within a narrow time frame and price, where unforeseen problems often occur, are first and foremost – apart from the necessary technical expertise and know-how – good planning, efficient management of the construction works and a good dialogue with all parties involved in the process. It is important that all parties feel and take on joint responsibility for the project, that the project management team is able to take decisions and that there is a general talent for finding solutions at any time.
Pihl performs the best when we are involved in a project at a very early stage since this gives us the possibility of finding the best solutions and allows us to add a good deal of our expertise and experience to the project. This way of working helps us carry out a project on time and at the agreed price.
The Royal Danish Playhouse, situated on Kvæsthusbroen at the port of Copenhagen, covers an area of 22,000 m2 and has three different stages. The largest of them can hold 670 spectators. The total height of the stage tower is 35 m. The playhouse is constructed partly in the water and has a promenade deck making it possible for pedestrians to pass the playhouse when taking a walk along the quay of the harbour. The construction period has been 36 months including establishment of collision protection, which has been placed in front of the building for protection against collision by vessels sailing too close.
On 16 February 2008 the playhouse will be open to the public and the first performance will be a new production of Shakespeare’s play ”Hamlet”.
