Pihl wins contract for extension of Borealis’ production plant in Sweden

E. Pihl & Søn A.S. has signed a contract for 300 million SEK for the extension of Borealis’ polyethylene production plant at Stenungsund, about 50 km north of Gothenburg

The extension of Borealis’ production plant comes as a consequence of the company’s need for increasing its production of plastic granulates for the plastics industry by approx. 350.000 ton per year, and Pihl’s contract comprises a complex industrial plant made up of ten large buildings, various foundations, pipe works and paving in a civil works area of 70,000 m2.

The client’s consultant is the Italian company of Tecnimont SpA.

The civil works to be carried out by Pihl must be completed in just 1 year including the start-up phase of the project. The short project period and difficult construction conditions, due to the new works being performed very close to Borealis’ existing production plant, require that Pihl’s organisation is very well-organized. About 30 salaried employees will be responsible for the management of the approx. 200 craftsmen working on the construction site. The works will be carried out partly by Pihl’s own craftsmen, for whom local accommodation will be arranged, and partly by Swedish sub-suppliers.

Pihl is very pleased to have won this contract in Sweden, where we are already carrying out several other projects, e.g. the Malmö City Tunnel; and with good references from other complex production plants around the world, Pihl feels well prepared for the task in Sweden.
