JV Pihl / Semco Maritime has just signed a contract with Aeroportos de Mozambique for rehabilitation of three airports; one in Mozambique’s largest town, Beira, one in Quelimane north of Beira and finally one in Tete at the Zambezi River in the western part of the country. Engineer on the project is Grontmij/Carl Bro. Pihl’s part of the contract amounts to approximately 13.5 million EUR.

The rehabilitation works, which are financed under DANIDA’s mixed credit programme, include new paving and new fences in two airports and new navigational equipment and lighting in all three airports.

The construction works in Beira will start in week 15/2008, in Tete in April 2008 and in Quelimane in August 2008. Completion is expected in 17 months.

Danidas Fellowship Programme

Denmark has supported Mozambique for a number of years. By the end of the civil war in Mozambique in 1992, the country was at the top of the list of the world’s poorest countries.

The overall objective of the Danish development programme for Mozambique is to eradicate poverty, and DANIDA’s mixed credit programme has been made available to support programmes, which help improve access to basic health services and education and advance long-term economic development by expanding the country’s insufficient infrastructure, etc. Thus, the rehabilitation of three airports will provide more optimum conditions for Mozambique’s trade with other countries and a sprouting tourism.
