Pihl to build first section of Stockholm's new urban railway (Citybanan)
A consortium consisting of E. Pihl & Søn A.S. and the German company of Züblin Specialtiefbau GmbH has won a contract of 1.3 billion Swedish Kroner for the building of a submerged tunnel for Stockholm's new urban railway called Citybanan
2008 01 29 Press Release
The new urban railway in Stockholm will be constructed as a 6-km long railway tunnel with two tracks under central Stockholm. Pihl and Züblin are to establish the first section of the railway; a submerged tunnel of a length of 370 m. The tunnel will run under the "Söderströmmen" and will connect the area of Söder Mälarstrand with Riddarholmen in the old quarters of Stockholm called "Gamla Stan".
The main part of the big tunnel elements for the submerged tunnel will be constructed outside central Stockholm and eventually towed to Söderström where the elements will be lowered into position and connected to constitute the complete railway tunnel. In this way, the environment is spared and the noise from the construction site in the centre of Stockholm is kept at a minimum.
Pihl and Züblin look forward to executing the works. Both companies have many years' experience within civil engineering works and are presently carrying out other tunnel works in Sweden; Züblin has a contract for three temporary tunnels (working tunnels) in connection with Stockholm's new urban railway, and Pihl is participating in the Malmö City Tunnel project. Pihl has experience from construction of other submerged tunnels such as the Oresund tunnel between Denmark and Sweden and the Guldborgsund tunnel.
Pihl and Züblin are to hand over the first tunnel of the urban railway at the end of 2012. The inauguration of Citybanan is expected to take place in 2017. The total cost of the project is estimated at about 15 billion Swedish Kroner.
