Turning the first sod for science center for natural scientific talents at Sorø Akademi
On 4th February 2008, the Mayor of Sorø turned the first sod for a new scientific center and dormitories at Sorø Akademi (upper secondary boarding school in Denmark) to be built by the Danish contractor E. Pihl & Søn A.S.
E. Pihl & Søn A.S. has been awarded a contract for building a modern natural scientific center and dormitories next to Sorø Akademi providing the optimum facilities for natural scientific talents.
The owner is Ejendomsselskabet Absalon A/S, and the construction of the new science center and dormitories is made possible by a donation of 110 million Danish Kroner from A.P. Møller and Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller’s Foundation.
High-quality building work
The science center is designed by project winning architects Kjaer & Richter A/S and is constructed as a two-storey circular building. The dormitories are built as a two-storey building with split-level building bodies.
According to the tender documents the science center and dormitories shall be built as a high-quality building work with low maintenance requirements, and both buildings will interact architecturally with the existing historic buildings of Sorø Akademi and the preservation-worthy surrounding green areas.
The atrium, the building’s heart, and the circular form of the building will visually be uniting the storeys and providing natural ventilation and a sound indoor climate. Moreover, the design of the building allows for a splendid view of the nearby lake and penetration of natural light into the building. Light partition walls will allow for easy rearrangement of the floor areas, which makes the building flexible and easily adaptable to future requirements.
The center is expected to be ready for use in the middle of 2009.
Experience from building institutions
“Pihl is very pleased with having won this contract and with being part of a team working together on the ambitious project of building the best possible facilities for learning and development. We have prior experience from a number of building projects for research and educational institutions, e.g. the University of Copenhagen’s new buildings on Amager, laboratories at the Copenhagen regional hospital in Herlev and at Statens Serum Institut (serum institute of Denmark), and the Biocenter of Copenhagen University,” says Bo Svendsen, Project Manager in Pihl.
