Pihl has turned the first sod for a 1.2 billion DKK schools project in Scotland. The various buildings involved will be constructed and operated as a Public-Private Partnership

The nomination of NYOP Education Consortium, with Pihl as the leading partner, to be in charge of design, construction and technical operations took place in December 2006, and after financial closure of the contract for 1.2 billion DKK, the schools project in Aberdeen, Scotland including ten schools and a sports centre is proceeding at a rapid pace. The project was presented at a press conference in Aberdeen today.
The NYOP Education Consortium is a co-operation between Icelandic Nýsir and British Operon, and about 50 Danish employees from Danish contractor E. Pihl & Søn A.S. have for some time been in Scotland in order to prepare the project in co-operation with the project’s collaborators and to recruit local work force. Thus, NYOP Education has been able to start construction of the two first schools, Cults Academy and Bucksburn Community Campus for 1,150 and 650 pupils respectively, immediately after closing of the contract.
The first school is due to open in the spring of 2009, and in the autumn of 2010 the last school included in the extensive project can ring the school bell for the first time. The new schools offering modern teaching facilities and fully equipped cooking kitchens for the on-site preparation of school meals replace old school buildings in need of repair and maintenance unable to meet the demographic changes in Aberdeen.
The schools are constructed from environmentally friendly building materials, and Pihl introduces a number of tested and certified Danish and Scandinavian building components for the new schools for which the focus has, from the very start, been on natural lighting and the indoor climate, which is important to children and young peoples’ ability to learn.
The school project in Aberdeen and the building of Museum of Liverpool make the British market very important to Pihl. At the same time Pihl’s involvement in the Scottish PPP project emphasizes Pihl’s position as Denmark’s leading contractor within Private-Public Partnerships, in Denmark as well as abroad. “We have entered the British market in order to establish ourselves on a permanent basis and we expect growth, also on the market for PPP projects,” says Project Director Claus Wiegand Larsen from E. Pihl & Søn A.S.
