A Danish construction consortium headed by E. Pihl & Søn A.S. has won an EU contract for the development of the future food and floral market in Høje Taastrup, Denmark. The construction consortium is a co-operation between Pihl, Creo Arkitekter A/S, Schønherr Landskab, Moe & Brødsgaard A/S and Logistik Centeret A/S.
Modern market place and distribution centre with efficient logistics facilities
The new market place and distribution centre for food and flowers will be replacing the existing food and floral market "Grønttorvet" in the heavily trafficked area of Copenhagen called Valby. The vision of the new market place, Copenhagen Markets, is a modern and future-proof market place and distribution centre, and its unique location near the motorway network in the western part of Greater Copenhagen as well as Malmö in Skåne, Sweden, offers the tenants at Copenhagen Markets substantial benefits and trading opportunities.
The winning project consists of a series of six-sided halls measuring 10,000 m2 each, combined with rhombus-shaped and three-sided halls joined in one building complex. The halls will be surrounded by a wide elliptic system of roads with easy access to a large number of gates, approach locks and ramps for regular and modular tractor trailers and trucks and parking lots for customers and guests of Copenhagen Markets. Furthermore, the winning project allows for future expansion and buildings on the property covering an area of 220,000 m2.
One of the professional judges in the tender panel, architect and partner in C.F. Møller, Mr. Julian Weyer, says: "The six-sided structure is a very exiting idea that will fascinate both customers and other interested parties. The winning project has the potential to function as a brand for Copenhagen Markets and it can at the same time be optimised to satisfy the requirements for efficiency by the future tenants."
More than 50 companies have already signed a lease agreement with Copenhagen Markets and will together with Copenhagen Markets and the Pihl consortium be invited to collaborate on optimising the final project before construction start-up in 2009.
E. Pihl & Søn A.S. is pleased with the award. "It is a challenge to take part in the development of a large market place and distribution centre such as Copenhagen Markets and to cooperate with a visionary building owner," says Project Director Bo Svendsen. Pihl has been selected as management contractor on various similar projects, for instance the shopping and amusement centre Field’s in Ørestad, Copenhagen.
