Upper secondary school outgrows its premises

E. Pihl & Søn A.S., architects Friis & Moltke A/S and consulting engineers Moe & Brødsgaard are heading a comprehensive extension of Tornbjerg Gymnasium in Odense.
The first sod for an extension of the upper secondary school from 18 to 30 classes was turned on Friday 14 August 2009. In the future, the school will be able to admit 840 students compared to the present capacity of 520 students.
The extension will partly take place in the form of a rebuilding of the existing facilities and partly in the form of a new building of about 5,000 m2. The new facilities will offer the students new modern science rooms, sports areas, music and drama rehearsal rooms, canteen, etc.
Tailored for modern teaching
The tender documents for the project have been prepared in cooperation with the client (the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation) and the users. The extension will therefore result in facilities tailored for modern upper secondary teaching with space for absorption and group work, and the school’s Team Denmark students (students enjoying elite sport scholarships) will be offered far better conditions than the present ones, which have undergone almost no alternation since the construction of the school in 1978.
The extension will cost approx. 7.3 million GBP and the project is planned for completion in October 2010.
One of the largest challenges in the project will be to carry out the works in a way that they cause as little inconvenience to the daily function of the school - particularly in respect of the actual teaching and the spring exams. Pihl has much experience in the field of renovating and extending buildings that are being used during project works and will do its best to communicate and cooperate with the school so that noise, traffic with machines and equipment, etc. is reduced or conducted in a considerable way.
