Turnkey contract for the UN City in Copenhagen

Today CPH City and Port Development signed a turnkey contract for the UN City in Copenhagen. The...

Press Release 29 June

The construction of the UN City will at the same time be the kick off for the development of the area currently being part of Copenhagen’s Free Port.
In less than three years the UN will be moving to its new headquarters at The Marble Pier; a building specially designed to accommodate the UN’s six organisations based in Denmark. The buildings will cover a floor area of 28,000 m2 and will be given a high environmental profile.

‘The UN City is part of the urban development taking place in the area of The Marble Pier, which will give the residents of Copenhagen access also to this part of the harbour area . It is a large-scale project and a big contract that has been signed today. I look forward to the further co-operation on the project,’ says Managing Director of CPH City and Port Development, Jens Kramer Mikkelsen.

The tender process for the six pre-qualified contractors was finalised on Friday 28 May 2010 and the winning company was E. Pihl & Søn A.S., which is to be in charge of the first stage of the construction of the UN City with a floor area of about 28,000 m2. The initial task will be to complete the work for submission of requests for building licences to the City of Copenhagen latest on 1 September 2010. The first building licence is expected to be granted on 1 December 2010, and the construction work can then be commenced.

‘The UN City will add yet another spectacular building complex to Copenhagen, and Pihl looks forward to carrying out this project in co-operation with the employer, CPH City and Port Development , and the other parties in the project. Pihl has many years’ experience of large, complex construction tasks, and our employees are therefore well equipped to solve the task at The Marble Pier,’ says Project Director Hans Anker Nielsen of E. Pihl & Søn A.S.

The UN City will be located at The Marble Pier and be part of the urban development of that area. The Marble Pier is much more than the UN City; a new housing area will be established as will a new hotel and commercial buildings – e.g. Steven Holls Architects’ spectacular 2-tower project – called the LM Project – which will be connecting Langelinie and The Marble Pier.

The Marble Pier is today part of the fenced in Free Port, but this will change when the development of the area begins - a new recreational area will be established at the head of the pier. And the UN City will contribute to creating an international environment with interesting architectural elements close to the city of Copenhagen.

The Marble Pier is being developed in a co-operation with Nordkranen and SNS Property Finance. The LM Project is, apart from the above-mentioned, also being developed in a co-operation with ATP.

Facts on the UN City:
The employer behind the UN City is CPH City and Port Development, and the house will be built as an low-carbon building. The Danish Energy Class 1 designation means that it will be an environmentally-friendly building using less than 50 Kwh per square metre per year for heating. A large solar cell plant will be located on the roof of the building, and the building will be constructed on an independent island specially constructed for the UN City. The UN City project has been designed by the architects 3XN, and the building is expected to be ready for moving in at the turn of the year 2012/13.

The six UN organisations currently based in Denmark are:
UNOPS – United Nations Office for Project Services
UNDP – United Nations Development Programme
WHO – United Nations World Health Organization
UNICEF - United Nations Children's Fund
WFP – United Nations World Food Programme
UNFPA – United Nations Population Fund

Pihl extends and renovates the headquarters of the Confederation of Danish Industry

Press release from
E. Pihl & Søn A.S. and DI (the Danish Confederation of Danish Industry)

June 16 2010

E. Pihl & Søn A.S. is to extend and renovate “Industriens Hus”, the headquarters of the Confederation of Danish Industry (DI)

The construction work is to commence on 1 September 2010 and is to be handed over on 31 May 2013.

DI’s headquarters has for many years been located at Rådhuspladsen in Copenhagen. It was on this spot in Copenhagen, where DI’s headquarters has now been located since 1980, that DI’s predecessor, ”Industriforeningen” had its headquarters built in 1878.

DI wishes their headquarters to have a clear and visible environmental profile. The building has been designed to meet the energy consumption requirements for Low Energy Class 2 which means that very strict requirements for the renovation of existing buildings are met.

- Today’s signing of the contract with turnkey contractor Pihl has brought us a big step further in this large construction project. The aspiration is, in three years from now, to end up with a modern, contemporary Industriens Hus that contributes to the plan of the City of Copenhagen to form a metropolis zone. We want to create a building which makes the area around Rådhuspladsen a more coherent area, says DI’S Managing Director, Hans Skov Christensen.

- Pihl has over the past years constructed a number of outstanding buildings in Copenhagen, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to extend and renovate DI’s headquarters. This is a very challenging project which is in keeping with Pihl’s wish to constantly develop the qualifications of our employees and challenge our own ability to see new opportunities, says Project Director Hans Anker Nielsen, E. Pihl & Søn A.S.

Today, Industriens Hus has a floorage of about 25,000 m². On completion of the renovation, the total floorage will have been increased to about 40,000 m². The reason for the extension is an increasing need for more conference facilities and of-fices. A larger headquarters will make it possible for DI to gather all employees under one roof just as DI can let offices to its various member associations and others.

The project comprises replacement of the present facade by a transparent glass facade, which will be used for display signs as is the case today. The part of the build-ing turning towards Rådhuspladsen will be increased by two storeys and in the part of the building turning towards H.C. Andersens Boulevard, a new 6-storey atrium will form the connection between Rådhuspladsen and the building.

Towards the street of Vesterbrogade, three more storeys will be added. Shops will be occupying two storeys. The facade will in this way be opened towards the street, urban life strengthened and the wide boulevard will become more attractive.

The public parking lot under Industriens Hus will be preserved.

The design of the building has been made in respect of its settings and neighbour, the Tivoli Gardens. Towards the Tivoli Gardens, the 8-storey terraced building steps down to two stories behind the Pantomime theatre in the Tivoli Gardens. This part of the building will have roof terraces with plants. The lighting in the offices will be adjusted by Venetian blinds just as trees will be planted in the property line to the Tivoli Gardens.

The project has been designed by architect Lars Bendrup from the architects TRANSFORM in Aarhus, Jutland. Consulting engineer is Rambøll Danmark A/S. Employer’s representative is Grontmij|Carl Bro A/S.

DI will during the construction period move to temporary quarters at Copenhagen Towers in the Ørestad south of the Copenhagen city centre. The move will take pla-ce in the middle of August 2010.

For further information, please contact DI’s Public Relations Manager, Rolf Ejlertsen, on phone +45 3377 3736 or +45 2220 4923.

Pihl to build large hydro power station in Greenland

The town of Ilulissat in Greenland can during 2012 and 2013 “put its present oil-heated combined...

Press Release 10 March 2010

The Greenlandic energy utility of Nukissiorfiit and Pihl have signed a contract for a new hydro power station to supply Ilulissat with electricity and electrical heating. The station will be producing about 65 GWh and will thereby be the country’s second largest station.

Experienced contractor in the construction of hydro power stations
Pihl has since the 1950’s built a number of hydro power stations in Iceland and Greenland and is presently building one in Panama also. For Nukissiorfiit, Pihl has built hydro power stations in Tasiilaq and Qorlortorsuaq in Greenland, and in November 2009 Nukissiorfiit began supplying electricity from a completely new hydro power station in Sisimiut.

‘Construction of hydro power stations is one of our earliest specialties, and Pihl employs a number of well qualified engineers and craftsmen with much experience in the field of construction of hydro power stations and tunnels. Many of them have worked in Greenland or in Iceland for many years and are accustomed to the extraordinary challenges that the Greenlandic climate and landscape pose for a contractor,’ says Kurt Carlsen, E. Pihl & Søn A.S.

‘ If you are in need of a particular spare part, you can’t just get it around the corner. Planning and logistics are therefore of vital importance. When unexpected situations occur on the site, the people working there must be able to improvise and be able to handle many different kinds of situations,’ adds Kurt Carlsen, who is looking forward to continuing the good cooperation with the energy utility on this new project in Ilulissat.

Apart from constructing hydro power stations in Greenland, Pihl has also carried out a number of building and civil engineering tasks, e.g. airports in Sisimiut, Qaanaaq and Paamiut, the University Park in Nuuk, offices and housing units in Nuuk and numerous ports in e.g. Ilulissat, Upernavik and Aasiaat.

Good for the environment and the energy budget
The new hydro power station is to supply electricity from a turbine as early as from 1 November 2012; and when the entire station is running in 2013, Ilulissat can “put its present oil-heated combined heating and power station on the substitutes' bench” and introduce green energy.

The station will be situated about 50 km north-east of Ilulissat. On this site it will be possible to take advantage of the drop height from a water reservoir which is 187 m above sea level. The water is led through an approx. 6 km long tunnel to a subterranean power station where three 7.5 MW turbines with generators are to convert the hydro power into electricity. Apart from the power station and blasting of the necessary tunnels, Pihl is also to construct a transmission line to Ilulissat, incl. sub-station.

Commencement of the works is planned to take place in June 2010.

During this summer, Pihl has won four new civil engineering contracts in Norway, Sweden and the...

Press release 27 August 2009

The contracts comprise extension of the Stamsund fishing port at Lofoten in Norway, road, bridge and tunnel works in Bergen, also in Norway, new railway bridge at Gothenburg, Sweden, and rehabilitation of a historic bridge in Boston, USA.

Fishing port at Lofoten
In June Pihl signed a contract for 47 million Danish Kroner with Kystverket Nordland to extend the Stamsund fishing port. The port will be having a new entrance and a new pier enabling larger vessels to enter the port.
The entrance area as well as the basin of the port will be dredged to -9 m and -8.3/-6.3 m respectively. The uppermost level of the pier will be +8 m, and the width at the top will be 5 m. The port will also be cleaned out in connection with the works. The works will be commenced in August 2009 and completed on 31 March 2011.

The Norwegian main road 567
Then in the month of July, we signed a contract for 145 million Danish Kroner with the Norwegian road authorities for a road, bridge and tunnel project RV 567 between Hauge and Lonevåg, north-east of Bergen – a new stretch of road of about 3 km that includes a 1.55 km long blast tunnel and a new 90 m long bridge over Lonevågen. The works, which comprise access roads, crossroads, roundabout, path for pedestrians and cyclists, will be commenced as early as in August/September this year. The road shall be ready for inauguration in September 2011.

Railway bridge in Gothenburg
In the very same month, Pihl and the Swedish Banverket signed a turnkey contract for a new railway bridge ”Marieholm-Olskroken” to the value of about 180 million Danish Kroner. The bridge forms part of a new railway connection between Gothenburg and Oslo.
The railway tracks will partly be placed on a dam, partly on the new 450 m long bridge, which will be cast in situ. Due to soft soil conditions, it will be necessary to drive about 80 km concrete piles to ensure the foundation of the bridge. The works have been commenced and will be completed in 2012.

Rehabilitation of Boston University Bridge
Finally, Pihl’s subsidiary in the USA has won a contract for extensive rehabilitation of Boston University Bridge over Charles River in Boston. The bridge, originally called the Cottage Farm Bridge, got its present name in 1949 and is of historic importance to the region. Apart from replacement of a large part of the bridge structure and obsolete drainage system as well as pavement works, the rehabilitation work comprises restoration of the ornamentations on the bridge. Emphasis will be put on the environment and the working environment in the execution process; this will apply to handling of waste and building materials, reduction of dust and use of equipment that is quiet in operation. The contract is worth about 92 million Danish Kroner.
The project period has been estimated at three years, but Pihl will endeavour to optimize work so that it will be possible to hand over the bridge after two years only.

Jernbanebro i Göteborg

Pihl has in keen competition with some of Scotland’s largest and foremost contracting companies won...

Press Release 2009 07 14

The total contract value exceeds DKK 265 m. The project will comprise 10,000 m2 new library facilities for one of the world’s oldest and most renowned international universities.

Cultural project of high international standard
The new library building will be situated centrally in the old university campus of Aberdeen and will, when completed, be one of the most outstanding cultural projects carried out in Scotland of recent times. The project will also be an architectural pearl in the city of Aberdeen.

The layout of the new library offers an excellent setting for the University of Aberdeen and facilitates new teaching and learning methods. The library will be equipped with highly effective and modern library facilities with thirteen kilometres of book shelves, 1,200 work stations, modern IT systems, exhibition rooms, educational facilities and an area dedicated to the university’s very special and valuable culture-historical collection of books and other literature.

The library project is the flagship of the University’s ambitious capital development programme, and is being supported by donations from individuals worldwide, companies and charitable trusts.

The library has been designed by the Danish architects schmidt, hammer and lassen, and the construction work will commence in August 2009 and handing over is planned to take place before autumn 2011.

By this project, Pihl emphasizes its expertise and dominant position in the field of large cultural projects; also outside Denmark. Apart from the library in Aberdeen, Pihl is at present carrying out another large project in Great Britain, namely National Museum of Liverpool, in co-operation with a local partner and a very large PPP schools project in Aberdeen involving construction of new buildings and renovation of existing buildings.

Pihl established its subsidiary in Great Britain in 2007 and it employs almost 100 employees on the British market. Pihl is presently working on tenders for more large building and civil engineering projects in Great Britain and expects continued growth on the British market.

E. Pihl & Son A.S. is to build a new quay and tourist facilities for cruise liners in Falmouth,...

Press release 2009 06 25

Pihl builds facilities for gigantic cruise liners in the Caribbean

The project, which Pihl has won as a turnkey contract – consists of two contracts amounting to a total value of 157 m USD.

Quay facilities with room for the cruise liner’s big sisters
The one contract comprises a brand new facility for the reception of Royal Caribbean’s gigantic cruise liners Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, which are to sail from Fort Lauderdale in Florida with stops at Labadee in Haiti, Falmouth in Jamaica, and Cozumel in Mexico.

The facility consists of an approx. 760 m sheet pile quay for the reception of Royal Caribbean’s two cruise liners, which carry a total of approx. 10,000 passengers. The quay is constructed on a 95,000 m2 reclaimed area, which is established by backfilling from the deepening of the entrance channel to the new harbour. The new harbour will be dredged to a depth between -11.5 and -12.5 m deep. Furthermore, Pihl is to establish 700 m costal protection, construct 600 m new pier, utilities, paving, jetty for smaller vessels, and parking spaces for taxis and tourist busses and a trolley lane.

Tourist facilities in Georgian architecture
The second contract comprises the construction of buildings and landscaping on the newly reclaimed area. Royal Caribbean’s American architect and engineer Idea Inc., Orlando, have created the conceptual design. The buildings are adapted to 18th century Georgian architecture, which is characteristic for the historic houses in Falmouth.

‘We are very happy to have secured the Royal Caribbean contract and are looking forward to continue our cooperation with the Jamaican port authorities, whom we know from our works in Kingston Harbor during the last 15 years,’ says Ghassan Farah, head of Pihl’s foreign acquisition department.

The project is to be financed by international banks, against a guarantee provided by Danish state-owned Eksport Kredit Fonden (“Export Credit Fund”). The financial backing of EKF has been a decisive factor in Pihl being awarded this contract.

The completion of the Falmouth facility is scheduled to take only 18 months, and the construction work is expected to begin in July 2009. During the construction period, Pihl will expatriate 40-50 employees, who are to lead and manage the project with 300-400 local workers and workmen.

Apart from Kingston Harbour, which has in large parts over the years been constructed by Pihl, the Port Antonio Marina in Northern Jamaica was also one of Pihl’s projects. Pihl has also carried out a major expansion of the Kingston cement factory and have renovated and extended more than 130 km highway on the northern coast of the island, with the final part of the project nearing completed and about to be handed over to the client.

This new project in Falmouth enters into the series of Pihl’s additional construction activities in the Caribbean, which at the moment includes harbour works and a power plant in Trinidad and Tobago.

Pressemeddelelse 25. juni 2009

DKK.

Turistfaciliteter i georgiansk arkitektur

Pihl wins 128 million USD harbour contract in Lebanon

E. Pihl & Søn A.S.’s new contract includes an extension of Beirut’s container terminal.

Press Release 2009 06 25

In tight competition with other civil engineering contractors from Europe, the Middle East and Asia, Pihl has won a contract for an extension of Beirut’s container terminal in joint venture with Hourie who are a Lebanese based company.

The extension of the harbour includes a new 500 metre long quay and a new container yard of 180,000 square metres. The new quay is an extension of the existing 600 metre long quay and breakwater, which was built by Pihl in 1998.

The new quay and container yard is positioned in an area with difficult subsoil conditions, due to among other things, the close proximity to the mouth of Beirut River. To compensate for this, the quay is constructed on 50 metre long concrete piles with a diameter of 1.4 metre. The area behind the quay will be established on reclaimed land and the contract also includes soil improvement, vertical drains, pavement and miscellaneous yard components such as reefers, substations, fencing and lighting etc.

In connection with the new quay and yard the dock is to be excavated to a depth of -17.5 metres to allow the docking of large container ships. Excavation works are by a combination of dredging, excavation and blasting of rock. Finally, the new quay and yard is to be reinforced by means of sheet piling, and to protect the structure further, Pihl will install rock and concrete accropodes.

Pihl and Hourie has won the contract for USD 128.1 million in a competitive tender with eight international bidders and the contract is awarded by the local harbour authorities, Gestion et Exploitation du Port de Beyrouth (GEPB).

The contract period is 915 days of which the first 180 days is allocated to geological investigations before the work can be finally designed and built. The building period is two years, and Pihl will station approximately 15 engineers and foremen in Beirut to manage the work and supervise locally hired workers.

´Pihl is pleased to have won the contract for the Lebanese harbour authorities, and we look forward to cooperate with the authorities once again,´ says civil engineer Ghassan Farah who is responsible for Pihl’s acquisitions abroad and have won contracts for a number of harbour projects in the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean area.

The turnkey group’s proposal called “The Palette” won the competition since it was the most financially advantageous project, and it was especially appreciated for its spacious design, it light common room being the heart of the building, and for the division of the institution into various units, which create a sense of belonging and offers the children security.

The facades are executed in light, environmentally friendly Trespa panels; alternatively in tiles. The window bars will be painted in colours making it easy for the children to find their way around. The palette of colours is in harmony with the colours in the various rooms, and, together with the stories told by a grown-up artist, RememberMyName (HuskMitNavn), they are meant to inspire the children to add their own creative decorations to the house.

The outdoor areas will have many different kinds of base; hard and soft, grass ”islands”, meadows and sand, which invite to various ways of playing and offer different experiences.

The acoustic conditions are very important for the users’ well-being, especially in a kindergarten. The winning project takes this into account by using soft surfaces such as pendant ceilings and geometrical solutions reducing the reverberation period.

To obtain max. energy optimization in the building and to meet the requirements for low energy buildings, the various energy solutions have been incorporated right from the design phase of the project. “The Palette” will have a larger surface with the possibility of a more efficient use of daylight coming via skylights and windows placed high in the walls, contrary to very compact structures where the surface is reduced and where energy is often used for artificial light.

The building’s partition walls, back walls and roof will be carried out in concrete, which has the property to retain the heat. The concrete back wall will be insulated with mineral wool completed by a climate envelope, and solar cells will be installed at the back of the building’s large skylights.

'We feel sure that it will be a funny and exiting task to build a highly modern kindergarten. And professionally speaking, it is very satisfactory to create a building with the architect and consulting engineer where energy and indoor climate solutions are considered right from the design phase. This will inevitably give the best result in respect of the appearance of the building and the actual energy savings obtained,´ says Søren Henriksen from E. Pihl & Søn A.S., which is at present carrying out a number of projects according to the regulations for low energy buildings, e.g. the Vitus Bering Innovation Park in Horsens, Jutland.

The modern kindergarten will cover an area of 1,300 m2 and will be receiving totally 112 children at the age between 0 and 6. The building will be holding facilities to receive up to 20 visiting children. Completion of the project is foreseen in April 2010.

March 16, 2009 Press release

E. Pihl & Søn A.S. - Annual report 2008

It has, in terms of operating performance, been a satisfactory year. The accounts have, however, been highly influenced by the international financial crisis, especially in Iceland.

Biggest turnover in the history of the group
The turnover amounts to DKK 6.5 billion, the biggest in the 122-year long history of the group. The generated gross profit of DKK 312 million is also satisfactory, and the operating profit of DKK 151 million is the best result ever.

The serious financial situation in Iceland has a huge impact on the overall result of the group through a large negative item under financial costs, but we can ascertain that our company in Iceland is still sound.

Our key figures are - except for one - satisfactory and in line with those of previous years.

Increased exports
In 2008 we were active in sixteen countries outside Denmark, from Greenland to Zanzibar, and from Sri Lanka to the USA, and the total share of exports amounts to 57%, which is slightly more than in previous years – a trend we expect to continue in 2009.

In Denmark we have carried out a number of satisfactory projects; in many of which Pihl has been a party in the very early stages of the projects. Some examples are the ”Copenhagen Markets” – a wholesale food market in the Greater Copenhagen area - and the first state PPP project for the building of Denmark's new national archives, “Rigsarkivet”.

Expectations
One of Pihl's strengths is that the group does not depend on one single market, and therefore the order book for 2009 looks quite promising. Since we are gradually adjusting our organisation to the tasks assigned to us, we do not expect any important organisational changes.
